Over the past few weeks, we’ve shown you a wide variety of gazebos, pergolas, pavilions, arbors, cabanas, pool houses and more, and of the several themes that have run through these structures, one stands out above all others – water.

That’s right, many of these items are designed to be used near some form of water feature, whether it’s down by the water front, or, more typically, next to your swimming pool.

Now, we realise, of course, that not everybody has room for a pool in their back yard, but that doesn’t mean you have to go without a water feature completely.

So, as you may have gathered already, we’re going to be looking at outdoor water fountains today.

Clearly, they don’t replace pools completely (e.g. you can’t go swimming in most fountains), but they do provide many other benefits.

Firstly, of course, there’s that magical sound of trickling water (click the Audio MP3 icon below to simulate this while you read the rest of this article).

Water Fountain

We don’t know about you, but it seems as though there’s something primal about that sound – that, and bird song, are two things that remind you of Mother Nature, and it’s also very relaxing, for some reason.

Secondly, and speaking of nature, fountains are a great way to attract birds to your yard, so if you enjoy watching our feathered friends, you could always set up a fountain outside your gazebo (or whatever structure you choose to install), and sit there, sipping on a cool drink, while you watch them come and go.

Then, if the fountain designer has done their job well, there is the aesthetic element to consider – the clever interplay between the fountain, the water, and the light as it sparkles off the water. A truly inspired fountain can be really mesmerizing!

So, having hopefully whetted your appetite, as it were, let’s take a look at just a few of the many designs that are available:

Estancia Wall FountainNow, you’ll no doubt have noticed that all of the above fountains are free-standing ones.

These too can take up a fair bit of space, especially the Grande Palazzo Fluted Fountain shown at the top of this page (which, by the way, is the largest displayed on this page – it comprises 29 pieces), so if you don’t even have room for any of these, then you can always consider a wall fountain, such as the Estancia Wall Fountain, depicted here.

This particular model is just 46 inches wide, 58 inches tall, and from front to back, it’s just over 26 inches, so it’s incredibly compact, and yet still offers you all of the benefits of your very own private water feature.

  4. Hi Rae and Mark,

Oh what beautiful “water features” as I remember their being called on the BBCA’s showing the British tv show, “Ground Force.” We used to LOVE to watch the show. I think fountains like these are so beautiful and want one both for the front area of a home near the driveway and also to have a few in the backyard. Plus they are excellent feng shui!

We have a small 3-tier fountain in our front landscape bed, a nice water feature on our rear deck, and a 2nd home on a lake.

Needless to say, being near water is important for my family. There is very little more relaxing than sitting quietly and listening to the sound of water.
