For those who are looking for something a little bit more functional than the traditional, standalone gazebo, you should consider a conservatory-style gazebo instead.

One very popular model is the Gazalum 12 x 15 1 Door 5 Side Glass Window Gazebo shown here, which is one of several sunroom kits they offer.

Now, as this gazebo is designed to be attached to your house, it has several important advantages.

  1. It is more convenient than having to traipse across your lawn to a free-standing gazebo, as it’s directly connected to your house.
  2. It’s fully enclosed, with glass windows, which means you won’t be bothered by bugs (although we do have a few solutions for getting rid of flies, etc.).
  3. Unlike open gazebos (and pergolas), you won’t be at the mercy of the elements, should it suddenly pour down or blow a gale.
  4. Leading on from the previous point, you can, of course, use it all year round – it needn’t be just a summer thing.
  5. And finally, don’t forget that because this is a sunroom, you can actually grow things in it.

One of the easiest ways to grow herbs, flowers, fruit (small ones only – no melons!) and, of course, lettuce and tomatoes is the AeroGarden.

This is a relatively new invention, and it makes growing things indoors not only easy, but fast too. Can you imagine the sweet flavor of your own home-grown fruit and veggies? Organic, no genetic experiments, no pesticides, no germs from food handlers, and all vine-ripened produce the way it was meant to be from nature.

See it in action here, using time-lapse photography:

They make a wide variety of models – some for specific purposes, some to take advantage of available space, and some that are just fun (but which might just encourage your children to develop green fingers at an early age):

So, back to the gazebo / sunroom itself.

This Gazalum gazebo is a five-sided all-weather model, built of maintenance-free aluminium, and has all the features of a Florida room.

The walls are built of 1.75 inch thing extruded aluminium, and you have a choice of colours – white, brown or sand.

The patio doors include a screen as well as a keyed lock, so that you can leave your property secure for whenever you have to leave your home unattended.

The super-structure of the roof is made from a high-density polystyrene core and aluminium panels. This means that the entire assembly is self-supporting, with no need for any additional internal walls or posts, and if you should happen to live somewhere that gets a considerable snow fall in winter-time, you can take comfort from knowing that the roof will bear the load without any problems.

Now, these Gazalum sunroom kits are supplied in kit form, and can be installed on either new or existing poured concrete patios or decks – provided, of course, that the existing structure is sound.

These units must be securely fastened down – simply placing them on the ground or on a patio stone base is forbidden.

All in all, if you’re looking for a really great sunroom kit to enhance your home, then we can highly recommend the Gazalum 12 x 15 1 Door 5 Side Glass Window Gazebo.

  3. I like this one. I would rather have my hot tub in a gazebo attached to the house so I wouldn’t have to walk out in the rain.

  5. I like the sunroom idea, you can use it year round yet still open it up to let the outdoors in (albeit via screened windows, so the bugs stay out). Very functional!

  6. Hi Mark,

I like how this gazebo is enclosed and really functions as a sunroom. When you have those beautiful backyards, this is the sort of place where I would take every meal as soon as it was warm enough to do so. Breakfast would last hours as I looked across the lawn sipping tea and nibbling on blue berries in heavy cream….. It looks very romantic.

In a survival situation you could use this to grow things to eat and also to use as medicines, esp if you live in a colder climate to extend the growing season.

  10. Ok, you got me on this one. I have always wanted sunroom, my kids wants a sunroom…but we bought a house without a sunroom…get the picture? Would love to have one and this is the best solution. No remodeling, no breaking walls, great idea.

I never thought of an attached sunroom as a form of gazebo but it makes sense. I would love to have an “all-season” room like this.

  13. I really like the sunroom addition. But I’m a fan of rooms with lots of natural light.

  14. I think this would be a perfect addition for someone living in the south or southwest.

Do they sell kits with thicker than 1.75 inch walls for northern or midwest climates?

I had something like this on my house in Detroit and it was impossible to keep heated in the winter becasue the walls weren’t thick enough for the winters.

This Sunroom provides an excellent source of passive energy by capturing natural, free solar energy. I think this is good as attaching an extra, so we can use it only when we need it.
