In our eternal quest to inspire you with interesting ideas on how to make your yard or garden a fun place to hang out, we bring you something different today – Tiki Bars!

To get you in the mood, we recommend that you click the Audio MP3 icon and listen to a bit of Hawaiian music while you read the rest of this review.

The Hawaii Chug

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Tiki Bars, this is what Wikipedia has to say about them:

“A tiki bar is an exotic-themed drinking establishment that serves elaborate cocktails, especially rum-based mixed drinks such as the “mai tai” or “Zombie cocktail”. Tiki bars are aesthetically defined by their Tiki culture décor which is based upon a romanticized conception of primitive tropical cultures, most commonly Polynesian.”

So, what this means, in practice, is that, if you can’t get to Hawaii, then bring Hawaii to your back yard and enjoy a bit of Polynesian culture every weekend.

The ideal spot for your Tiki Bar would be by the poolside, close to your , but if you don’t have a pool (yet), then on your patio would work great, or any quiet spot in your garden.

If you’re having guests around for a BBQ, then wouldn’t it be a lot more fun to serve drinks from your own private outdoor Tiki Bar, than to keep having to run inside to get them from the kitchen?

Vinyl Tiki BarThese particular Tiki Bars come in two finishes – treated pine, shown above, or vinyl, shown here. (Note that the underlying structure is still made of wood – the vinyl sheathing is purely to help protect it from the elements.)

They are available in three different sizes:

  • 8 x 8 ft
  • 8 x 11 ft
  • 8 x 13 ft

Maxi-Matic TS-749 Elite Retro-Style Fountain Drink Mixer… and you can also choose from a wide range of roofing styles and colours, you can add a cupola if you like, which always make the roof look more attractive in our opinion, and we would also recommend adding the optional electrical package, so that you can have drink mixers, music, etc. available.

We both prefer the treated pine Tiki bar, not only because we like the look of natural wood, but also because we feel it is more in keeping with its Polynesian origins.

I have enjoyed more than one tropical drink (complete with little umbrellas) while traveling to exotic tropical locales.

I can only imagine how much fun it would be to travel out to my backyard to do the same.

Who needs sand and water when you have a pitcher of Mai Tais right in your own back yard. Too much fun!
